Understanding Area Codes

The United States is divided up into different geographical regions which are known as area codes that correspond with dialling areas. The area code system was first developed by AT&T and Bell Laboratories and was finally brought into effect in 1947. The system was called the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), it included the United States and Canada and divided the U.S. into 86 numbering plan areas. New Jersey was the first country that got its own area code which was 201.

The idea behind area codes was to ease direct dialling of long-distance telephone calls. Some countries have one area code, while others have multiple area codes. Over the years, the need for more phone numbers increased which led to adding more area codes. When certain areas have exhausted all the telephone number combinations within that area code, they will add an overlay. An overlay area code is just an additional area code that is given to a geographic region. With an area code overlay, all current customers will keep their area code and telephone number.
